ASL Basic Sign Language – Week 2 Lesson Plan

Topic: Family & Greetings
Time: 1 hour
Goal:
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to greet people, introduce yourself, and talk about your family members using ASL.

What You’ll Learn Today:

  • Common greetings like "Hello" and "How are you?"

  • Family signs like "Mother," "Father," and "Sister"

  • Finger spelling names

Family Signs

Now let’s talk about family! I’ll teach you signs for family members one by one. After I show you the signs, you’ll practice with a partner.

Here are the family members we’ll be learning today:

  • Mother: Put your thumb on your chin with fingers spread wide.

  • Father: Put your thumb on your forehead with fingers spread wide.

  • Sister: Make two "L" shapes with your hands. Start with your thumb near your chin, then move it down to rest on the other hand.

  • Brother: Same as "Sister," but start near your forehead.

  • Grandma: Do the "Mother" sign but move your hand forward twice.

  • Grandpa: Do the "Father" sign but move your hand forward twice.

Activity:

  • You’ll get a flashcard with a family member on it, and you’ll practice signing that person with a partner.

  • After you get the hang of it, you can tell your partner about your family! Use fingerspelling to sign their names, too, if you like.

Tips:

  • Practice signing slowly at first. Accuracy is more important than speed.

  • Feel free to ask for help or to see the sign again if you’re not sure!

Lesson Steps:

1. Quick Review of What You Learned Last Week

We’re starting with a warm-up!

  • First, we’ll review the ASL alphabet. I’ll ask you to finger spell your name, and you can practice it in front of the class. Don't worry if you’re still learning—we’re here to practice together!

  • Next, I’ll ask you to sign a few words from last week, like numbers or other simple signs.

Tips:

  • Take your time with each letter of the alphabet when spelling your name.

  • If you're unsure, feel free to ask for help!

2. Learning Basic Greetings (15 minutes)

Now, it’s time to learn some common greetings! I’ll show you how to sign each of these words, and you’ll have time to practice after:

  • Hello: Give a friendly wave near your forehead.

  • Goodbye: Open and close your hand by your mouth.

  • Good morning: Pretend your arm is the horizon, and bring the sun up with your other hand.

  • Good night: Bring your hand near your mouth (for "good"), then tuck one hand over the other to show sleep.

  • How are you?: Point at your chest with both hands, then extend one out in a curve, raising your eyebrows like you're asking a question.

  • I’m fine: Tap your thumb on your chest with an open hand.

  • You good?

  • Fine

  • Good

  • Bad
